Lift yourself up.

Do you get stressed about being stressed? Do you feel disappointed in yourself?

Self-compassion is what you need.

Compassion for oneself is a lesson I learnt from my Professor at university. Compassion is not only for others, first we must learn to apply it to ourselves, said our professor. I had never thought of compassion, being applied to myself as an emotion. When I think about it now, this was my “a-ha” moment. This meant being understanding of myself and accepting myself as I am. It is the first and most difficult step in managing stress.

Carl Rogers says “the curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”

How do you practice self-compassion?

Give yourself credit for the way you do things, don’t beat yourself up; instead offer yourself compassion. Everyone does things differently, just because there is an established way to do things, does not mean it is the best and the only way. Experiment and find your best fit. Whether it is about your lifestyle, your waking up time, your sleep-time or your study time. Maybe you cannot adjust your timings for work or study online, then feel easy to develop your own routine around these timings which might not be in your control.

Stress is not your enemy.

Stress is not always bad. Don’t look at stress as the enemy, look at it as a guide. When you start feeling stress, you also start looking for alternate ways of dealing with the task ahead or with your emotions or with your feelings. Looking for newer pathways to resolve stress is a motivator. Exploration of the self can also be deeply meaningful which has its start generally in ‘feeling stressed’ so relax, and open your mind.

The only watch-out point is to make sure that the associated stress you are feeling with a situation is aligned with your own values. Then an introspection into the stress that you are feeling will be growth oriented and sustainable.

Stress is an unavoidable factor in life, make it your friend.
